FAQs
Why should I work with a photo stylist?
If you’ve never worked with a stylist before, you’re really missing out! While I provide a range of services, my main goal is to make sure everything in your final photo looks perfect. What that entails can vary from project to project.
Some houses seem photo ready but even they can benefit from some tweaks: removing client’s personal items; adding life with flowers, throws and other touches; or even simply adjusting the furniture so it looks best for the camera. You’ll be surprised how much better things look when you hire a stylist!
Other spaces may need a little more work. Is your project filled with kids’ toys? Has your client brought all their old furniture with them? Do the rooms seem lifeless or empty? We can work together to figure out what your project needs to make it shine for the camera.
Okay, I definitely want to work with a stylist. How does the process work?
The best place to start is by contacting me about your project. We can discuss details such as timeframe, shot list, and budget. If it’s an interior shoot I like to see recent photos if possible. Every project is different, and a discussion about scope helps me provide an accurate estimate.
Next we set a date to shoot your project. Coordinating schedules can be tricky; it’s better to at least hold dates and best to confirm those dates as soon as possible.
A note about holds & confirmations: If someone already has your project dates on hold, your project will be placed on a second (or third, etc.) hold. If you are ready to confirm, anyone ahead of you has 24 hours to release their hold or confirm their dates before we can confirm my availability for your project.
Walkthrough
In my opinion, a walkthrough of the project is essential to a great shoot. Walkthroughs are most useful with the photographer, stylist, and any relevant clients. The walkthrough gives us a chance to create a specific shot list and plan the angle of each shot. This saves time on the shoot day and ensures you get all the shots you need. Often walkthroughs reveal how many days are needed for your project or allow us to narrow down the scope to fit the days allotted. It can also save money by allowing me to plan for specific angles instead of preparing for areas that won’t be seen.
If a walkthrough is impossible to coordinate, current scouting shots and a specific shot list are essential.
Got it. So how much does it cost?
The price varies per project. The more I know about your needs, the better estimate I can provide.
Styling Fee
I work on a day rate: a set rate per day for each shoot day. Most projects require some amount of preparation, so I also charge a day rate for each day I need to get ready for your shoot. If it’s a large project, there could also be some time spent wrapping things up.
Styling Fee = (Day Rate) ×
(Prep Days + Shoot Days + Wrap Days)
I usually work with at least one assistant who also works on a day rate and whose fee is calculated the same way.
Half days are billed at 60% of the day rate.
Expenses
This is the most variable part of each project. Depending on your needs and budget we’ll set an amount that seems appropriate.
example expenses: floral, food props, rentals
